Derbyshire vs L&RVLGA 1st team at Matlock Tuesday 18th August
16 intrepid ladies travelled up the M1 and across the Derbyshire lanes to Matlock, to play on a course which had seen a little overnight rain and in slightly cooler temperatures than of late. Some of the Derbyshire ladies’ jumpers ominously proclaimed them to be past captains of the county squad. Derbyshire’s captain was not playing and took photos of the fourballs on the first tee next to the Derbyshire banner and ours (of long-legged Laura of L&R, with the sun shining through her legs). We went out like Homer on his Odyssey to face all the challenges of slopes, bunkers, raised greens and distractingly expansive views. Our heroics were in vain however, as all but Fiona and Diana at the front were slaughtered, resulting in a loss by 7 to 1. There was no bloodshed, but instead tremendous company and honourably fought matches. All declared the day greatly enjoyable, even when we took back the ribbon-bedecked Wooden Spoon with a record of this match over the past 20 years and a new version, ready for the next 20.
