Leicestershire & Rutland Veteran Ladies Golf Association

2nd Team v Lincolnshire 16.7.25

Leicestershire and Rutland Veteran Ladies v Lincolnshire
at Lincoln Golf Club on Wednesday 16th July 2025

The incredible luck of 2nd /3rd teams continued as we played our seventh match in the dry with sunny skies!!  This was especially true bearing in mind the biblical rain the previous day.

The 16 ladies who took part came from no less than 14 clubs over the counties so it was a great opportunity for all to meet new people.

Although a long drive, it was worth it to play on a lovely course with verdant fairways thanks to a large investment in irrigation; a shame there was more sand than on Brighton beach 😂😂

The overall result of a loss to Lincolnshire 5 to 3 was no mean feat!!  Achieving 2 wins, 2 halves and some very close losses against a side with many ladies playing at their home club on a course where local knowledge was king counts as a moral victory!!  Well done all 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼  This was acknowledged by the Lincolnshire Captain who apologised profusely for fielding so many local ladies, necessitated by her plight of inheriting a team 8 ladies short the day before, filling the gaps up to 10pm the previous night 😱  There was much rewriting of score cards even on the day!!

All this notwithstanding, the ladies who participated said they enjoyed the course, food and company with all games being played in the true spirit of golf; all more important than the result.

The photos show the team with the Lincoln Imp.

According to legend, the Lincoln Imp was a creature sent with a companion by the devil to cause chaos in the cathedral.  It’s said they broke furniture, tripped up the clergy, and generally caused mayhem.  As the story goes, an angel appeared to stop the imps, turning one to stone while the other escaped.  The stone figure of the Lincoln Imp remains frozen in place, high up in the Angel Choir where he can be seen todayOver the centuries, the imp has become a symbol of the struggle between good and evil, a reminder of the cathedral’s spiritual power.

The sculpture at the club has its own story being fashioned out of the remains of a felled oak tree that had previously been the bane of all golfers in the middle of the 14th fairway.
